SUMMARY:SIA Saskatoon Branch - Invasive species removal (Baby's Breath)
DESCRIPTION:SIA Saskatoon Branch is happy to partner with Meewasin Valley Authority for an Invasive species removal activity on Thursday\, August 1 \,2024\, at 5:00 pm. \nBaby’s-breath is an invasive species that thrives in basic soil and full sunlight. A beautiful flower that is often used in decorative arrangements. Once Baby’s-breath has invaded your land it reduces native grasses and forages for wildlife. Once the seed of the Baby’s-breath starts to mature the plant breaks off and rolls like tumbleweed over long distances and can spread thousands of seeds per plant.  This volunteer event is special because you get to work alongside our resource management team\, with 20+ years’ experience working in the valley. They’ll share a ton of incredibly true facts about the area we live in while exploring one of our favorite spots on the river. \nDate: Thursday\, August 1\, 2024 \nTime: 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm \nCost: Free \nRegister here \nLocation: Meeting point at Crocus Prairie. \nThis activity qualifies as branch activities for articling agrologists and as CPD

SUMMARY:SIA Saskatoon Branch & Meewasin Valley Invasive Species Removal
DESCRIPTION:The SIA Saskatoon Branch is happy to partner with Meewasin Valley for an Invasive Species (European Buckthorn) Removal activity. \nAbout this event: European Buckthorn is an aggressive invasive shrub species with large and brittle thorns. This needs to be removed to increase the biodiversity of existing native grasslands. Great care must be taken to remove this species with the utilization of pruning loppers and handsaws. Long pants covering your ankles is necessary for this activity\, as well as the avoidance of any clothes that can get caught on thorns easily (we recommend jeans\, nylon and synthetic fabrics). \nDate: Wednesday\, July 24\, 2024 \nTime: 5;00 pm – 7:00 pm \nLocation: Saskatoon Natural Grasslands \nCost: Free \nRegister here \nThis activity qualifies as branch activities for articling agrologists and as CPD.

SUMMARY:Prairie Water: Workshop: Water management tools for the Prairies
DESCRIPTION:Date:  Sunday June 16\, 2024 (Half Day – Morning) \nWater management on the Prairies must deal with risks from drought\, flooding\, degraded water quality and climate change. Additional risk comes from using outdated information to make complex water management decisions. \nThe workshop will expose participants to two tools for water management that were developed by the Prairie Water project team and designed for use by practitioners and researchers. The tools provide data to inform water management decisions and infrastructure design and are the result of over 5 years of Prairie Water research on water management challenges in the region. \n\nPrairie Hydrology Design and Analysis Product (PHyDAP) – Hydrological data input for hydraulic models to design infrastructure and calculate robust return-period flows (includes historic conditions and future climate projections).\nData Visualization Dashboard – A tool for viewing and interacting with spatial and temporal data for the Prairies\, including a novel watershed classification\, hydrological variables and ecosystem services under a range of climate and wetland management scenarios\, pesticide application rates and occurrence indices\, and groundwater recharge rates. Download links for data included.\n\nFacilitators: Kevin Shook\, Chris Spence\, Colin Whitfield\, and Lauren Miranda\, University of Saskatchewan \nCost: $30.00 Regular\, $15.00 Student \nRegistration Links: Full or Single-Day Registration and/or questions – Please email cwra2024@cwra.org
