SUMMARY:Invasive Species Control – Yellow Salsify (Tragopogon dubius)
DESCRIPTION:The SIA Saskatoon Branch is proud to partner with Meewasin Valley Authority to bring you this branch event.\nMeeting @ Beaver Creek Conservation Area\n\nMeeting Point\nMeet Katie\, our Volunteer Coordinator\, at Chip’s Lodge. Here’s a link to a map of our meeting point.\n\nAbout this event\nYellow salsify (Tragopogon dubius)\, is an invasive plant that typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 feet (30 to 90 cm). It spreads quickly through the production of numerous wind-dispersed seeds\, thrives in a variety of disturbed habitats\, and outcompetes native plants for resources. Its deep taproot makes it difficult to remove\, but careful digging can be effective. To remove it\, dig down at least 12 inches to ensure the entire taproot is pulled out\, as leaving any part behind can allow the plant to regenerate. Its seeds can remain viable in the soil for years\, ensuring its persistence. Lacking natural predators or diseases in non-native areas\, it crowds out native vegetation\, reduces biodiversity\, and disrupts ecosystems by altering habitat structures. We will be hand pulling and bagging the plant to ensure proper disposal.\n\nTo ensure you have a great experience\, there are a few things we’d like you to know:\n\n\nYou must be registered to attend this event register here\n\nWe will begin at 4:30 PM. and end at 6:30 PM. Please be on time as there is a bit of a walk out to the plants\, it is easier to go as a group!\nUpon arrival check in with Meewasin’s Volunteer Coordinator Katie or Events Assistant Zach!\nThis is an outdoor experience – Please dress for the weather and be prepared to work outdoors. Things like comfortable clothes\, a hat\, gloves\,and proper footwear will make your experience more enjoyable. We’ve got the safety gloves\, and all the rest of the equipment we’ll need for the day. This event is weather dependent and please note this event may be moved to a later date. Please note ticks are out this time of year\, please do a throughout tick check at the end of the event.\n\n\nBring a full reusable water bottle to carry with you\, there is no potable water at this event and hydration is key \, but please note there are washrooms on-site at this location\n\nPlease note: This activity counts as a branch activity for articling milestones\, check lists will be signed by the SIA office. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday June 24\, 2026\n\nBaby Breath @ Peterrson’s Ravine  \n4:30 – 6:30 PM\n\nMeeting @ Crocus Prairie Parking Lot\n\nMeeting Point\nMeet Katie\, our Volunteer Coordinatior at Crocus Prairie. Here’s a map of our meeting point.\n\nAbout this event\nBaby’s-breath is an invasive species that thrives in basic soil and full sunlight. Although it is a beautiful flower often used in decorative arrangements\, once it invades land\, it reduces native grasses and forage for wildlife. When the seeds mature\, the plant breaks off and rolls like a tumbleweed\, spreading thousands of seeds over long distances. We will supply shovels to help dig out the roots\, which is important to do as deeply as possible to prevent Baby’s-breath from returning. Our efforts will focus on removing this invasive plant and helping to restore native vegetation in the area. Join us to work alongside our resource management team\, who will share fascinating facts about the region.\n\nTo ensure you have a great experience\, there are a few things we’d like you to know:\n\n\nYou must be registered to attend this event register here\n\nWe will begin at 4:30 PM. and end at 6:30 PM. If you’ll be late\, no worries! Just let us know! Even if you pull one bush of baby’s breath it will still make a huge difference!\nUpon arrival check in with Katie.\nThis is an outdoor experience – Please dress for the weather and come prepared to be hiking outdoors. Things like a hat\, sweater\, windbreaker\, sunscreen\, and proper footwear will also make your experience more enjoyable. Long pants and covered ankles are a good idea in the long grass.\nBring a full reusable water bottle to carry with you\, there is no potable water at this event and hydration is key. Please note there are NO washroom facilities available on-site.\n\n\nVolunteer Requirements\nAll volunteers\, ages 8 and up\, both new and experienced\, are encouraged to attend\, no skills set required. We will be using shovels to dig the extensive root system out of the ground – Meewasin will provide the work gloves\, shovels and other equipment we’ll need for the day but feel free to bring your own tools.\n\nQuestions?\nEmail kwalls@meewasin.com or volunteer@meewasin.com or feel free to call our office Mon to Fri 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM at Tel.: 306-665-6887 cel: 306-291-3015\n\nNote: This activity counts as a branch activity for articling milestones\, check lists will be signed by the SIA office.
