News: SIA Convention & AGM a Success!

The 2016 SIA Convention & AGM took place on April 6-7, 2016 in Swift Current, SK. With over 140 attendees the event was an opportunity to learn about the future of agrology as the profession balances both agriculture and the environment.

On April 6th the Convention started at the Days Inn with registration and supper. Following the official welcome the opening keynote was by Taylor Peck, PAg (Summit Liability Solutions) and Ken Greer, MSc, PAg (Western Ag Group of Companies) discussing the future of agrology as agricultural and environmental sectors work together to protect the public interest.

Following the opening session the networking reception was a success with members quenching their thirst with a rum punch, compliments of Bourgault Industries. Everyone was entertained by The Keila and Claudia Mariachi Show (Keila is an AAg at the U of S). Many members had fun at the creative photo booth, compliments of JayDee AgTech.

On April 7th, the Convention continued at the Sky Centre, starting with a breakout for articling members, who were treated to an invigorating presentation by John Spencer, PAg on Professionalism and Ethics. The full members heard about social license impacts on agrologists from Sharla Hordenchuk of the Ministry of Environment, Tom Harrison, PAg with SODCAP Inc, and Mike Raine of the Western Producer.

After a networking, everyone gathered to hear Michael Champion, PAg (Ducks Unlimited Canada) and Tom Jensen, PhD, PAg (IPNI) discuss the policies and practice of the environmental and agricultural sectors.

The Honours and Awards included a Ukranian menu. Prior to the presentation of awards, Dave Christensen, PhD, PAg spoke about his many hours to create the 70th Anniversary booklet. A big thank you goes out to Dave for his work in creating such a fabulous document.

All five Honours and Awards were presented to exceptional nominees. The common message from each award winner was the importance of getting involved and to always look to your professional network for support. (see below for photos and bios of the winners).

The Annual General Meeting followed lunch. The Three-Year Strategic Plan (2017-2019) was accepted by the quorum of members and a fee increase for 2017 was approved. Please watch for the minutes in the coming weeks.

The Convention ended with a session on effective leadership by Rachelle Brockman of Eureka Experience. She had members talking to each other about different aspects of leadership using the new vision, mission and values of the SIA. She challenged all attendees to be effective leaders of the new Three-Year Strategic Plan. It was a great way to end the convention.

Thank you to all those that attended the convention - it was great to see everyone!

A big thank you goes out to our sponsors, without whom the Convention would not be possible.
