About the presentation: This presentation will discuss some evolving techniques used in recent years to assist in the delineation and identification of chloride impacts in the potential presence of a range of non-oil and gas sources, including cases where naturally occurring chloride appears to be elevated. Some of the specific techniques to be discussed include chloride isotopes, bromide analysis, examination of different ion ratios, and the targeted use of a range of other lines-of-evidence. By better understanding the potential for these non-oil-and-gas or natural chloride sources it allows for the more effective use of investigation and remediation efforts to return a site to equivalent land capability. It also ensures that chloride impacts are not being over-remediated, thereby keeping unnecessary soils out of landfills and ensuring all environmental receptors are protected and land can be returned to productive use in a sustainable manner.
